OpenAI Brings Image Generation to ChatGPT 4.0
Big news of the week – OpenAI brings image generation to ChatGPT. This means you can now easily create and customize visuals, and refine them without losing context.
OpenAI has launched a new feature in ChatGPT 4.0 that allows users to generate images directly from text. This upgrade makes ChatGPT even more powerful, adding a creative and visual dimension to its already impressive text abilities. Now, you can not only talk to the AI but also ask it to create images based on your descriptions.
Company announced in their blog: “GPT‑4o image generation excels at accurately rendering text, precisely following prompts, and leveraging 4o’s inherent knowledge base and chat context—including transforming uploaded images or using them as visual inspiration. These capabilities make it easier to create exactly the image you envision, helping you communicate more effectively through visuals and advancing image generation into a practical tool with precision and power.“
Let’s break down these features:
Create images from text prompts
You can describe what you want, and ChatGPT will generate an image based on your description.

Refine images through conversation
You can give feedback and make changes to the image, just like editing a photo. That means ChatGPT can build upon images and text in chat context and maintain a certain visual consistency.

Upload images
If you have a picture, you can upload it and ask ChatGPT to make adjustments or changes to it.

Generate up to 20 objects in one image
Most AI image generation tools still struggle with creation of 5-8 objects, but ChatGPT can create complex images with 10-20 elements easily.

Additional features include:
- Adjust image details: You can specify things like colors, sizes, and backgrounds, making the images more personalized.
- C2PA metadata for authenticity: OpenAI is using advanced metadata to clearly show when an image is AI-generated.
Initially, the feature was being rolled out to users with various types of accounts, including Free, Plus, Pro, Team, and soon Enterprise and Education accounts.
But with an overwhelming response received, the feature will for now only be available in paid plans. Here’s what Sam Altman had to say about the same:
images in chatgpt are wayyyy more popular than we expected (and we had pretty high expectations).

rollout to our free tier is unfortunately going to be delayed for awhile.
With this upgrade, creating images will be as easy as chatting with ChatGPT. Just type in your request, and watch as it brings your ideas to life.
OpenAI continues to push the boundaries of what AI can do, making it easier for everyone to interact with technology in creative ways.
