What’s New in Bluesky?
1. Three-Minute Video Uploads
Bluesky users can now post videos up to three minutes long, up from the previous 60-second cap. This shift mirrors the growing emphasis on video content across social media.
🔹 Why it matters:
- Longer videos encourage more creative content and deeper engagement.
- Competes directly with platforms like X, Instagram, and Threads, which already support extended video formats.
- Signals Bluesky’s push toward becoming a full-fledged multimedia platform rather than just a text-based alternative.
2. Chat Requests for Direct Messages
Bluesky is making it easier to filter messages from unknown users. With the new “Chat Requests” feature, messages from people you don’t follow will land in a separate inbox, where you can approve or ignore them.
🔹 Why it matters:
- Reduces spam and unwanted messages.
- Offers users more control over their private interactions.
- A feature already seen on Instagram and X, making Bluesky more competitive.

3. Easier Muting Options
Users can now mute accounts directly from a post without visiting a profile. This small but effective update enhances content moderation and user control.
🔹 Why it matters:
- Streamlines moderation, allowing users to filter out noise effortlessly.
- Aligns with moderation tools seen on other social platforms.
Bluesky’s Push to Stay Competitive
Bluesky is growing beyond just being a Twitter alternative. With video uploads and better messaging controls, it’s trying to keep up with bigger platforms like X and Instagram. These updates make Bluesky more user-friendly, but will they bring in more users? That’s the real test.
