Instagram Tests AI-Powered “Create Task” Feature in DMs
Meta is testing a 'Create Task' feature that can turn DM chats into to-do lists. Learn how this practical AI addition compares to OpenAI's Operator and what it means for creators on Instagram.
Instagram users may soon have a helpful new way to keep track of things they need to do, thanks to a feature currently being tested by Meta.
The social media giant is experimenting with a “Create Task” button in Instagram’s direct messages that would let you turn conversation points into actionable tasks.
For example: Your friend messages “Don’t forget to send me that recipe before Sunday!” With a single click, you could turn that into a reminder task without leaving the chat.
Similarly, you can see in the image below, the user creates a task for following their friend on Threads and Twitter, which gets scheduled by the task manager right away.
App researcher Alessandro Paluzzi first spotted the feature, which appears as a simple prompt option within Instagram’s DM interface.
Currently, the AI-powered “Create Task” feature is in early testing with no official release date announced. It’s the kind of small addition that could become part of your daily routine without you even noticing.
This move is part of Meta’s broader push into AI-powered tools that do more than just chat. It follows Meta’s recent introduction of AI chatbot profiles that users can interact with on Instagram and other Meta platforms, showing the company’s commitment to integrating AI throughout its ecosystem.
How Does It Compare to OpenAI’s Operator?
If you’re not aware, OpenAI also launched “Operator” a few days back. Operator’s approach is like hiring a personal assistant who can browse the web for you – research vacations, compare prices, and even make purchases.
On the other hand, Meta’s approach feels more like that sticky note you’d put on your fridge – simple but effective. It works with how we already use Instagram rather than trying to completely change our habits.
What Could This Mean for Creators?
For content creators and businesses on Instagram, the new “Create Task” feature could open interesting possibilities:
More organized collaborations – Creators could quickly create tasks from partnership messages or fan suggestions
Improved audience engagement – Converting follower requests into actionable items could help creators be more responsive
Streamlined workflow – Social media managers juggling multiple accounts could track content ideas and deadlines directly within the platform
Potential integration with Meta’s creator tools – Future versions might connect with content calendars or campaign tracking
The development represents just one piece of Meta’s larger AI strategy, which could eventually lead to more comprehensive tools that help creators manage their online presence more efficiently. If successful, we might see similar task-creation capabilities appear across Meta’s family of apps, including Facebook and WhatsApp.
For now, Instagram’s task creator remains in testing, with users eager to see how this small but potentially impactful feature might evolve.
