Threads adds its own word filter, separate from Instagram!
Threads now has a separate and better word filter than Instagram! Yes, you can now block words, phrases, or emojis just on its app. Best part? You can even set a timer for how long you want to mute the words.
When Meta launched Threads, the platform was supposed to be an alternative to X, and was pretty much a sister platform to Instagram. Both Instagram & Threads were inter-connected, and were sharing a same group of features. That made sense because Threads was finding its footing and leaning on Instagram’s massive user base to drive early growth.
However, with Threads gaining significant users, the platform has now started decoupling from Instagram. Latest proof is the all new and better word filter.
Here’s how the word filter works: You create your own list of words, phrases, and emojis you’d rather avoid. Then you choose how long each term stays hidden—anywhere from one day up to 30 days. During that time, you won’t see those words in any part of Threads. After the timer ends, the words reappear unless you block them again. It’s that simple.
Remember, before this feature, the word filter for Instagram & Threads was combined. That means if you filter a word on one platform, it would automatically be blocked from the second one as well.
While announcing this feature on Threads, Adam Mosseri, said: “Threads is about fostering an open exchange of perspectives, and to do so people need to be able to shape the experience into one where they feel comfortable expressing themselves. This is just one more idea in support of that goal.”

Now let’s see how the word filter can help you out! Binge-watching a new show? Mute spoilers until you’re caught up. Planning a surprise party? Keep the secret words hidden. Need a break from talk about a big event like the World Cup or Oscars? Pause those topics for a few weeks.
By giving this filter only to Threads, Meta is making it clear that Threads is its own app now. For anyone who wants a cleaner, more personal feed, it’s a handy new tool.
