Instagram Introduces Edits: Meta’s New Free Video Editing App
Instagram just dropped Edits — a clean, powerful alternative to CapCut with zero watermarks. Here's what to expect.
If you have struggled with keeping track of video ideas and content media at one place, I have a good news for you. Meta has just launched “Edits” – a full-fledge editing application that connects to your Instagram profile and syncs
If there’s one thing Meta excels at, it’s making the most of every opportunity where they can swoop in to replace their competitors. For example: when TikTok briefly went dark in the US this January, Meta was quick to use it to their advantage. On the same day, they teased the launch of an editing application “Edits” – a direct competitor of CapCut. (Just so you know: TikTok and CapCut both have same parent company, Byte Dance)
Well, the day has finally arrived and Meta has finally launched “Edits” – a free, AI-powered video editing app now available on both iOS and Android. (PS: No cookie points to the team for the very obvious nomenclature though!)
Coming back to Edits, this is going to be a good news for you if you have struggled with keeping track of video ideas and content media at one place.
How? Let’s explore a bit more about that now.

What Is Edits?
Edits is Meta’s answer to the modern creator’s demands: a free, AI-powered video editing platform that supports creation across multiple platforms — not just Meta’s own apps.
With Edits, users can:
- Export videos in 4K — watermark-free, even without a subscription.
- Leverage advanced AI features, such as:
- “Animate” to turn static photos into videos.
- “Green screen” for background replacement.
- “Cutouts” to isolate specific objects or people with precision.
- Organize content using tabs like:
- Ideas – jot down future video concepts.
- Projects – manage drafts and editing workflows.
- Inspirations – explore trending audio to pair with videos.
- Auto-generate captions and add music from Instagram’s licensed audio library.
Once edited, content can be shared directly to Instagram or Facebook, which makes the process of posting content easy for all creators and social media managers out there.
In words of Adam Mosseri: “With Edits, we want to bring your entire creative process into one place.” Which means you can now shoot, edit, and post content from a single platform, without having to navigate different devices and tabs.
What Sets Edits Apart from CapCut?
One of the best differences? No watermarks.
Unlike CapCut, where free users have to deal with branded exports or upgrade to CapCut Pro, Edits gives you high-quality, clean exports from the start.
Additionally, Edits brings a deeper level of integration with Meta’s platforms. For creators already posting on Instagram, this means easy and access to analytics that track content reach, performance, and audience behavior.
AI Features and What’s Coming Next
Meta’s roadmap for Edits includes:
- Keyframes: for frame-by-frame animation of movement, scaling, and positioning.
- Modify: an upcoming AI-powered tool to change the “look and feel” of entire clips in seconds.
- Collaborative editing: allowing teams, brands, or influencer partnerships to co-edit and review drafts in real time.
- Expanding creative assets: more fonts, transitions, text animations, sound effects, and filters are all on the way.
Needless to say, Meta is building Edits to be a long-term staple in the creator economy.
You can download Edits for free from the App Store or Google Play Store. An Instagram account is required to use the app, but the videos created can be shared across various platforms.
